2009 hyundai sonata review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Economical midsize sedan improved for 2009. introductionhyundai sonata gets a host of revisions for the 2009 model year. It comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, power heated outside mirrors, power windows, central locking with keyless remote, am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo with six speakers, xm satellite radio, tilt steering wheel, 60/40 folding rear seat, and 215/60r16 tires on 16-inch steel wheels. The popular equipment package 650) adds automatic headlights, chrome window belt moldings, upgraded interior accents, power driver seat with adjustable lumbar support, steering wheel audio controls and a trip computer. The premium package 1,650) for se adds an upgraded am/fm/xm/6cd/mp3 audio system with six speakers, subwoofer and component amplifier; power tilt-and-slide sunroof; and an electrochromic auto-dimming rear view mirror with homelink and a compass.  the limited 23,970) adds leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, automatic climate control with filtration, the top-line audio system, electrochromic auto-dimming rear view mirror with homelink and compass, door sill trim and a sunroof. A chrome grille, chrome-accented exterior door handles, and bodyside moldings identify limited from the outside. Wheels and tires are the same size as those on the se, but use a different tread pattern. The limited v6 25,670) is similarly equipped. A new voice-activated navigation system is available 1250).  safety features on all sonatas include dual-stage front-seat airbags; front-seat side-impact airbags for torso protection; and full-coverage side curtain airbags designed to provide head protection. Antilock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and electronic stability control (esc) with traction control also come standard, as does a tire-pressure monitor. walkaroundalthough it's just a couple of years old, the hyundai sonata has been given a mild facelift for 2009. The front fascia remains refreshingly clean and spare, with sharply angled headlight housings and a deeper, clean-cut grille topped with a sliver of chrome. Wide and deep openings beneath the front bumper provide a home for tightly focused fog lamps and visually pull the front end closer to the ground, while directing cooling air into the radiator. The striking, concave hood reduces the car's perceived mass without cramping the engine compartment.  the side treatment avoids the all too common wedge look with an almost horizontal beltline riding above softly shouldered fenders and door panels. Mirrored z-seams where the end corners of the bumpers meet the quarter panels add interest, while blacked-out window surrounds play down the tall side glass. The flat-flanged rims on the up-level 17-inch wheels suggest a high-end european import more than an affordable asian nameplate.  the taillight outlines repeat the headlight shapes and bookend a broad, trapezoidal license plate inset; the backup light portion of the lens is smaller but output is the same. Again, there's a hint of other cars' architecture, most notably segment heavyweights like the camry, accord, and malibu. Sporty, california hot rod-idiom dual exhausts mark the v6-equipped versions.  the hyundai sonata continues to refine its signature design cues, the sculptors looking in the right places without offending conservatism. interiorthe 2009 sonata interior is a significant step forward from the previous model, although housed in the same cabin space. It is judged a large car by epa size standards and is the largest among midsize sedans in terms of interior volume.  the cabin feels more integrated, with new flowing lines for 2009. A tapered center stack rolls gently off the dash into the center console, replacing the blocky look of the previous dash. The overall look is competitive with most in the class and reminds us of some nissan and acura interiors. Materials seem to have more depth, as even the hard plastic trim common on lower door and console panels looks better.  lighter materials frame the vents and center stack. The center stack houses the clock, audio and navigation systems, and climate controls. There's also a sizable bin that holds 10 cd jewel cases above the ashtray ahead of the shifter. Splashes of trim grow from the console outward mid-height on the dash and are mirrored on the doors; on cars with woodgrain trim the shifter gets a slice of the same material. The largest is the speedometer, to its left is the tachometer, to its right conjoined water temperature and fuel gauges. In the lower dash to the left of the steering column is a bank of five switch plugs, only two of which are employed in the u. Version; one is an on/off for the esc (electronic stability control), the other the dash-light rheostat. Beyond that is a flip-down storage bin. The ignition key slides into a slot placed where it should be, in the dash to the right of the steering column instead of on the steering column itself, easier and more elegant when starting or shutting off the car.  for 2009, the limited model is available with a voice-recognition navigation system. Redundant controls for the audio are to the lower left-side of the hub. On the other side of the hub are the standard cruise controls, with a helpful cancel function. All stalk functions are straightforward and require no adaptation.  outward visibility is good, although some will find the wide c-pillars constrict quick, over-the-shoulder traffic checks for lane changing. Rear side windows roll all the way down, thanks to small, fixed, rear quarter windows that move the windows' rear tracks forward in the door, ahead of the wheel well. There's a roof-mounted, hinged assist handle inside every door.  seats are comfortable, with adequate bolstering fo. 1997 chevrolet camaro review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A remarkable performance bargain. introductiondue to their relatively low sales volumes, sport coupe redesign intervals generally extend well beyond the shelf life of a mainstream sedan. Which means they have to look good and perform well for a long time. And that prescription accurately describes the chevrolet camaro and its corporate cousin, the pontiac firebird. More practical concerns, such as room for rear-seat passengers, cargo capacity or fuel economy, are not really addressed with these cars. Moving up the price ladder from there is the rs trim level and above that the high-performance z28. Trim levels for the pontiac variant are the standard firebird, the formula and the hot rod trans am, all starting substantially higher than their chevy counterparts.  the base engine for both cars is gm's excellent series ii 3800 v6. That's equivalent to many v8s, especially those of the not-too-distant past, without the cost, fuel economy penalty or extra insurance premium often associated with a v8. With 285 horsepower and a standard six-speed manual transmission, it makes the camaro or firebird a genuine high-performance car that's capable of 150 mph-plus.  if that's not enough, order the camaro ss with forced air induction or firebird ws6 with ram air and the horsepower goes to 305, accompanied by further suspension upgrades. Base price was $16,215, plus destination of $525. In addition, it had the $1231 preferred equipment group 2, (option code 1sc), which includes cruise control, remote hatch release, fog lamps, power doors, windows and mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote keyless entry and theft deterrent. The option code y87 performance package was another $400, 16-inch alloy wheels added $275, the p235/55r16 tires were $132, the am/fm cassette uplevel sound system was $215, a rear window defogger added $170, power driver's seat was $270 and carpeted rear mats were $15. The front seat passenger has about the same seating position, except the engineers placed the engine's catalytic converter so that it creates a hump in the passenger's footwell, which could be an annoyance to some. And when the passenger seat is empty, the seatback flops forward under hard braking, a perennial annoyance in these cars.  the tiny rear seats are shaped with deep buckets in the cushions, and they're suitable only for small packages or really small people who don't complain. Cargo space is also limited. Open the rear hatch and there's a modest crosswise bin behind the rear axle, and a higher shelf that's behind the rear seats. We're talking groceries for two. The low driving position and low center of gravity contribute to a hunkered-down, responsive feel. This enhances handling, by moving weight from the front to the rear. The front suspension is upper and lower control arms, not struts. And the rear axle is suspended on coil springs with a system of links that keep it properly located.  with the optional performance package, the camaro (or firebird) becomes a remarkably good handling car-- better, in fact, than many that wear the 'sports car' label and cost a good deal more. Driven conservatively the ride is smooth enough for reasonable sports car expectations and well controlled. It's obviously not as fast as the v8-powered z28, but it's fast nonetheless, drives great, and hits several targets on the affordability scale. summaryobviously, these kinds of cars aren't for everyone. Interior room is modest at best and the responsive performance entails some compromises. And lookin' good all the way. assembled inste. 2008 chevrolet hhr review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Retrowagen gets more performance. introductionthe chevrolet hhr is a car-based retro-wagon that celebrates its chevy heritage with styling inspired by the iconic 1949 suburban. Hhr stands for heritage high roof, a reference to the early high-roofed suburbans and panel trucks that inspired the design of the hhr.  based on the same platform as the chevrolet cobalt, the hhr was first launched as a 2006 model. The hhr competes most closely with the chrysler pt cruiser, but also with honda element, ford escape, and jeep liberty.  for 2008, the hhr lineup gets a new high-performance ss model.  we found the chevy hhr fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus, it gets decent fuel economy.  the hhr panel van features smooth, windowless side panels and rear cargo doors with no handles. The rear cargo doors open via an instrument panel button. While it’s more spartan inside and provides seating for only two, the panel best exemplifies the early suburban heritage.  the hhr ss is the most fun to drive, launching quickly off the line and offering sharp handling. On an autocross circuit, we found it handled like a sports car.  the hhr interior isn't as functional as we'd like, however. And the base cloth fabric left us wishing we'd ordered the optional leather.  the chevrolet hhr remains relatively unchanged for 2007 with the exception of slightly more powerful engines and a few additional new color choices. New exterior color options for 2007 include imperial blue metallic and golden teal metallic; a new interior color option is ebony. lineupthe 2008 chevy hhr comes in three distinctively different configurations: hhr, hhr panel, and the new hhr ss. It comes in several trim levels, including the base ls and two lt grades. The ss comes with a high-performance 2. 0-liter turbocharged engine.  the ls 16,515) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows and locks, and a substantial level of standard features and equipment. The lt 17,175) adds an mp3 player with a jack for an ipod, eight ways to adjust the driver's seat, and satin chrome trim.  the 2lt package 2,395) adds the 2. 4-liter ecotec engine, anti-lock brakes, traction control, fog lights, a 260-watt pioneer sound system with seven speakers, 17-inch aluminum wheels, sport-tuned suspension and bright chrome trim.  the hhr panel 2lt 20,850) comes with the satin chrome exterior package, sports suspension, 17-inch painted aluminum wheels. The pioneer sound system is optional. The base hhr panel ls 16,820) is equipped similarly to the five-passenger ls.  safety features include optional front and rear side-curtain airbags 395). Abs comes standard on the 2lt, and is optional for the ls and 1lt 400). Stabilitrak electronic stability control is now standard across the entire hhr model range. walkaroundwe like the retrospective styling treatment served up by the hhr across the model range. The closest comparison to the chevy hhr is the chrysler pt cruiser. Both fill a respective need in their individual camps.  the rounded nose of the hhr is not unlike chevy's ssr, which also reflects the brand's truck heritage. The hhr's fenders are well defined with flat side wheel well openings contrasting favorably with the vehicle's many curved, contemporary sculpted surfaces. Front and rear bumpers and fog lamps are integrated into seamless fascia, with integrated running boards offering another nostalgic touch. The flush glass all around, including the windshield is a nice touch, as are the headlights surrounded by body panels in old school fashion. The tail light treatment consists of two round vertically stacked lenses on each side. The large, prominent grille is chrome, (except on the ss model), and appears much like that of the 1949 suburban.  front and rear bumpers are molded from composite material, integrated as part of their respective fascia. It provides lots of room and functionality without being boxy. When viewed from a distance, the hhr looks larger than it really is. Examined closely, it's compact. The cargo doors open wide enabling cargo access from both sides of the vehicle, as well as from the rear lift gate. The cargo doors are smooth and don’t have external handles; they are opened via a dashboard release button or the remote keyless entry fob. The large, continuous area created by the windowless cargo doors and rear panels is ideal for business logos, advertising or personalization. Side visibility is obviously limited due to the solid sides without windows; one must rely primarily on mirrors for backing maneuvers. The smooth, windowless sides on the panel give it a cleaner, retro, more hot rod look than the standard models. The lack of windows adds security for contents inside.  the hhr ss sits 6 mm lower than it stable mates, but sports extended front and rear fascias that give it the appearance of riding much lower. The new front fascia features an air-dam design with integrated fog lights, and the chrome surround grille comes with mesh-style upper and lower grille inserts. The new rear fascia provides a cutout for single bright exhaust tip. New rocker moldings resemble accentuated running boards. Out back, a rear spoiler is mounted above rear glass. Body-color door handles, mirror caps and rear license plate surround, along with ss badging on the front doors and rear lift gate further differentiate the ss from its stable mates. interiorinside, the chevy hhr provides for the most part, comfortable and functional surroundings. Speaking of headroom, there isn't a lot of it, in spite of the high roof. Also, the door lock button is positioned so that it interferes in driving and resting one's left arm on the window sill, a traditional and nostalgic pose.  cubby storage is limited. There's a handy flip-up compartment on top of the dash and a small glovebox. The rear provides one cupholder and small door pockets. The rear cargo floor flips up to reveal a five-inch-deep tray useful for storage. The rear lift gate is one piece, and raises easily.  solid rear quarter panels are available in place of the windows on all five-passenger models (via a window delete option).  the hhr panel provides seating for two and a large, flat cargo floor, with tie-down points located strategically on the floor with available, floor mats that allow for easier movement of cargo. The hhr panel features a flat load floor featuring a rubberized floor that provides utility and functionality for commercial or lifestyle activities.  the hhr panel cargo area features a standard auxiliary power outlet, as well as a 40-amp auxiliary power connector to provide service for a variety of specialty equipment needs. Two large, storage compartments, with a lockable option, are located forward under the cargo floor (in place of the rear seats in the passenger models). The compartments offer security for things such as computer equipment, flashlights, service manuals and other valuables.  the hhr ss features a special interior with ss-embroidered sport seats with inserts, a specific gauge cluster, an a-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and a new shifter arrangement. Three interior color combinations are available: ebony, light gray and victory red. A special gm performance driver’s seat, providing added lateral support and spirited driving comfort is optional and we think it's a must. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter ecotec (an upgrade that comes as part of the 2lt package) is an impressive and versatile engine. The torque peak figure at such high rpm suggests that the low-rpm pulling power might be weak, but quite to the contrary, it's not. We drive up a steep, slow hill every day, and the hhr plugged up the hill like a tractor, with no shifting-down or searching by the automatic transmission. This high-load, low-rpm driving is what many drivers demand.  transmission ratios have a lot to do with the efficient del. 2000 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It just keeps going and going and going. introductionwhen we're all old and gray they're still going to be selling these things. Jeep cherokee is a case study in how long a solid design can remain viable, even when some of its elements have become dated. Cherokees sprouted in suburban driveways like mushrooms. Jeep sold more than 165,000 cherokees in 1999 - more than what it sold the year before. The reason: it's tough as nails and starts at less than $17,000. Se comes with wind-up windows and vinyl upholstery. Air conditioning is optional.  sport models add the new 4. 0-liter six-cylinder engine along with premium cloth. Sport models come packaged with air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, a tilt steering column and a rear wiper washer. Classic adds a higher level of trim and nicer cloth.  limited models come with leather upholstery and other features. And in international markets, as well. Square, tough and durable.  the cherokee was the first unitbody sport-utility vehicle, as distinct from the traditional body-on-frame approach. There are two levels of 4wd available for the cherokee, part-time command-trac and full-time selec-trac. interiorcherokee's interior shows its age and comes up a little short in the comfort department. It was hard to perceive its interior as cramped or awkward, because by the standards of the day they weren't. Times have changed, however. Suvs have become luxurious station wagons. Without a major redesign, the cherokee hasn't kept up with that trend. Newer entries place a high priority on comfort. Compared to them, the cherokee measures up as pretty snug, particularly in the rear seat.  it's also uncomfortable for the driver. Adjust as we might we were never quite able to achieve an ideal driving position. Cherokee's limited front seat travel left us sitting closer than we wanted to be, and reaching up for the wheel rim. The primary instruments are a bit small, but the secondary array is a little more comprehensive than average, including an ammeter and oil pressure gauge.  it's possible to load the cherokee with comfort and convenience features, including a good sound system with cassette and cd players, air conditioning, power driver's seat, an overhead digital info center and two digital clocks. All of this stuff makes the going more pleasant, but we'd trade most of it for better seats. In fact, we suspect some people would dismiss the cherokee as choppy on this score, and mark it down to a relatively short wheelbase. That would be true -- as far as it goes. However, this is not an explorer, a sport-utility vehicle designed for people who see this breed as trendy station wagons. The combination of good ground clearance, short wheelbase and a favorable power-to-weight ratio make this boxy little veteran a tiger in the woods. As always, we'd prefer a manual transmission.  power notwithstanding, the cherokee's optional six-cylinder engine feels a little primitive compared to most of the v6 engines offered by jeep's competitors. An inline-6 is supposed to be an ideal design for smooth operation, but jeep's version generates noticeable vibration through most of its operating range. It's also surprisingly quick with the six-cylinder engine.  lack of caution in the option shopping process can escalate its price beyond reason; $27,000 seems like a lot to spend on one of these. And at that price, even with its limitations, the jeep cherokee still stacks up as a good buy. model lineup4-door 4wd: se 19,230); sport 21,570); classic 23,040); limited 25,365)4-door 2wd: se 17,720); sport 20,060); classic 21,525); limited 23,245)2-door: 4wd se 18,195); 4wd sport 20,535); 2wd se 16,680); 2wd sport 19,025). assembled intoledo, ohio. options as testedam/fm/cd/cassette with graphic equalizer 410); infinity premium speakers 350); up country suspension group 725) includes heavy-duty suspension with gas shocks, deletes standard rear stabilizer bar, skid plate group (transfer case, fuel tank, front suspension skid plates), trak-lok differential, heavy-duty engine cooling, full-size spare tire, tow hooks. model testedcherokee sport 4wd 4-door 25,365). 2006 subaru b9 tribeca review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New suv challenges nissan and toyota. introductionsubaru is becoming a premium brand. It looks like something from an alfa romeo. Subaru's new chief designer came from alfa, but he told us the grille was already set in stone when he arrived. The design of the tribeca doesn't please everyone, but seems to grow on some people with time.  tribeca is a trendy, upscale neighborhood between new york's soho and lower manhattan districts. It isn't cheap real estate. Nor is the subaru tribeca cheap transportation. For its part, the tribeca is competitive in the class, especially given the lengthy list of features with which it comes standard, much of which are optional or not even available elsewhere.  extensive driving in northern california revealed the tribeca to be a joy to drive, comfortable and practical. In short, we'd list it as a buy. That's a strong recommendation, given that we think highly of the highlander and murano. lineuptwo versions of the 2006 subaru b9 tribeca are available: a five-passenger 30,695) and a seven-passenger 32,395). Each is available in standard and limited trim.  neither trim package is lacking in function or comfort. All tribecas, for instance, have subaru's vehicle dynamics control system, which joins forces with variable torque distribution all-wheel drive and all-wheel traction control to help the driver maintain control. Standard wheels are 18-inch aluminum alloys with low-profile, all-season tires; a tire pressure monitoring system is standard, too. Brakes are vented discs with antilock and electronic brake-force distribution systems.  safety features include subaru's unique auto-retracting brake pedal assembly designed to lessen exposure to crash-related injury for the driver's feet and lower legs. Front seat occupants are protected by dual-stage frontal airbags, seat-mounted side impact airbags and active head restraints, which automatically push forward and up in rear-impact collisions. Curtain airbags insulate the front and second row seats in side impacts. All seating positions get adjustable head restraints, and outboard seats have height-adjustable anchors for seatbelt shoulder straps. The second row of seats is almost as flexible as the two front seats, with a 40/20/40-split reclining seatback and a 60/40-split seat bottom adjustable fore and aft. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning is standard, as is a 100-watt, am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo with six speakers. Cruise control is standard. So are power windows, outside mirrors and door locks. The steering wheel, which also tilts, and shift knob are covered in leather. And there's an information center displaying audio settings, time, fuel economy and outside temperature.  the seven-passenger tribeca gets that way via the addition of a third-row seat split 50/50. It also adds heated front seats and an auxiliary rear air conditioner fan control in the second seating row.  moving up to the limited in both the five-passenger 32,295) and seven-passenger 33,895) versions replaces the standard cloth upholstery with a choice of smooth or perforated leather seating surfaces. The stereo is upgraded to a 160-watt system with a six-disc, in-dash cd changer and nine speakers, including a sub-woofer in the rear cargo area.  factory options are offered only on the seven-passenger model and include a rear-seat dvd entertainment system 1800) and a touch-screen, dvd-based, gps navigation system 2000). Subaru-approved options for both models and installed either at the port or by the dealer (installation costs are extra) number some 20 or so and include an assortment of features. Among them: an auto-dimming inside rearview mirror 183), battery warmer 30), engine block heater 30), hood protector 73), roof rack-mounted kayak carrier 147), roof-rack mounted bike carrier 140), and towing package with hitch and oil cooler 514). walkaroundthe 2006 subaru b9 tribeca shows a new, soon-to-be trademark face to the world. Purportedly patterned in a manner to remind us of its parent company's history as an aircraft manufacturer, with a central air intake flanked by grilles that look like wings, the new front end reminds us more of a poorly executed knockoff of classic alfa romeos. But that's a personal opinion. But we have better taste than they do. In any case, we don't consider the grille a deal breaker.  moving past the odd grille arrangement, there is an undeniable aero-sleekness to the flow of the various surface planes and scupltings. Headlights are integrated into the leading edges of the front fenders. In plan view, the front end's curvature can be seen to ease the movement of the tribeca through the air. The steeply raked windshield and a-pillars pull the eye up and over the tall glass house to a spoiler laid atop an acutely angled back window.  body side panels are mostly vertical, not quite slab-like, their expanse broken by mild fender blisters circling properly proportioned tires and wheels. Beginning at the trailing edge of the front door and even with the door handles, a soft crease grows as it moves rearward, giving the rear portions substance before ending in the wraparound taillights. The top half, above the continuation of the waist-high side crease, comprising the rear window and spoiler and looking rather light and airy, looks as if it came from a different vehicle than the bottom half, comprising most of the liftgate, the license plate surround, the bumper and lower trim panel and looking somewhat ponderous. Perhaps it's a consequence of having to package sufficient interior room for a third-row seat, but like the front end, it's a departure from the subaru look we've come to know and will require some acclimation. And as fondly as we recall the previous century's hot rod era, the dual exhausts don't quite fit.  by the way, the b9 designates the platform. We didn't have much luck getting that out of them. So we'll just call it the tribeca, a name that goes well with forester, outback and impreza. interiorthe subaru tribeca's interior is a stunning styling statement. Visually, and ergonomically, it's a delight. It's been a long time since we've felt so immediately comfortable climbing into a new car for the first time. A little more time behind the wheel revealed that it's not perfect: the front seat cushions could be deeper for more thigh support, and the back support isn't great.  right off, we didn't have to climb up into it, despite its positioning as a hybridization of wagon, minivan and sport utility. Rather, we simply opened the door and sat down. The relatively high seating position allowed us to check traffic several cars ahead, and outward visibility is marred only by seemingly overly thick a-pillars. We expect, though, that this is something we'd learn to work around.  once buckled in, all the controls fell right to hand, and the gauges and panels tasked with communicating important information did so quite naturally. Well, maybe the fuel and coolant temperature gauges weren't completely intuitive, tucked away in the lower outboard corners of the instrument cluster and utilizing leds in lieu of the analog style. But we found it hard to imagine ways to improve the remainder, including the large, easily scanned tachometer and speedometer.  beyond the bits and pieces, the organic, almost-wholesome sweep of the dash as it flows into the door panels creates cocoon-like comfort zones for front seat occupants. Arms and hands rest naturally on nicely textured surfaces with the requisite buttons and levers where they should be. Steering wheel-mounted supplemental controls are styled into the sweep of the wheel's spokes. The shift lever's sportshift slot, which allows the driver to manually select the desired gear, is properly placed to the driver's side of the primary gate.  the rounded center stack extends into the cockpit for easy access to its controls and features. The primary audio control knob is centered within ready reach of the driver and front-seat passenger. The heating and ventilation controls are really cool, with big knobs that feature digital readouts. The front passenger's air conditioning temperature control knob is thoughtfully positioned facing t. The car was professionally and tastefully finished and set up as a mild hot rod. It has an original all metal straight body with no rust. It is quick and reliable, operates and drives like a modern car but has the look and feel of those great 40's fords. It is a truly exceptional saturday night cruiser. The all ford drive-line has a strong 302ci v8 engine sitting in a highly customized and detailed engine bay attached to a c4 automatic transmission with a programmable shift kit, ford 9 inch rear and rock solid components. The odometer shows 42,467 miles and the documentation and receipts dating back to 2004 are included.
